DETROIT – The normally truck-clogged Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, has drawn 150 bicyclists on one of the rare occasions the international crossings opens to foot-powered traffic.
Sunday’s bridge crossing was part of the annual Bike the Bridge tour.
The Detroit News says bikers of a wide range of ages rode through neighbourhoods on the city’s near southwest side during the tour. The sponsoring non-profit group Tour de Troit uses public events to promote bicycling, bike safety and running.
Part of the $65 that each participant paid is going for the upkeep of bike paths in Detroit.
The Ambassador bridge normally bans bikes and pedestrians. Bridge management allows participants in Detroit’s fall marathon to use the bridge as well.
